Venice Carnival 2012 Workshops

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

VENICE, ITALY - MARCH 02: Carnival costumes and masks pose near St Mark's Square in Venice, Italy. The Venice Carnival, one of the largest and most important in Italy, attracts thousands of people from around the world each year. The theme for this year's carnival is 'Ottocento', a nineteenth century evocation, and will run from February 19 till March 8...HOW TO BUY THIS PICTURE: please contact us via e-mail at sales@xianpix.com or call our offices in Milan at (+39) 02 400 47313 or London +44 (0)207 1939846 for prices and terms of copyright.. (Marco Secchi)

This is a one or two days workshop. The Venice Carnival is famous all over the world, and we believe it deserves its reputation. What we are offering is a great photographic experiences, something you would not be able to see or experience on your own. This tour is all about photography and we do not spend our time sitting inside each day and critiquing photos. Although we will do some critiquing, the written critique we furnish upon your return is a much more detailed learning tool.
We don’t let you simply roam the streets, hoping to bump into people in costume. What we offer is quite different from the average photo tour. We do not have dedicated models who pose for us on private shoots because we want YOU to catch the real atmosphere and MAGIC of Venice during Carnival.

Your 2 Teachers will be Marco Secchi and Guillem Lopez

Venice Biennale head ousted

Saturday, October 29th, 2011
Motto of the the Biennale di Venezia 1997.

If the Venice Biennale art exhibition now runs like a normal international event, with adequate toilets, refreshment points, marketing, press facilities and ticketing, and also manages to cover nearly 80% of its costs, it is almost entirely due to former banker Paolo Baratta, 72, chairman of the Biennale Foundation from 1998 to 2000, and from 2007 to last week.

Yesterday Baratta heard that his mandate would not be renewed and his successor would be a foodstuffs importer, Giulio Malgara, 73

I strongly believe it is the wrong choice…possibly the worst choice to be correct.

This appointment, which is reminiscent of the years before 1998 when the post was a prize allocated on the basis of party politics, was greeted with indignation by the mayor of Venice, Giorgio Orsoni, who immediately put out a statement saying: “I am convinced that Giulio Malgara is an unsuitable person to carry out the role of chairman of the Venice Biennale and that it would be a mistake to confirm him in this position. It would interrupt a vital and fruitful process that needs to be seen through to the end.” Former mayor Massimo Cacciari said: “As long as cultural appointments in this rotten system are in the hands of the political lobbies, it will go on being like this.”

The Guardian alredy commente: “Back to Earth, or Venice, with a bump. Silvio Berlusconi is trying to replace Paolo Baratta, head of the Venice Biennale, with his friend Giulio Malgara, a 73-year-old businessman whose greatest cultural achievement to date is bringing Gatorade to Italy.”

In Praise of Doubt

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Some of the images I have  taken at the Press preview of In Praise of Doubt, click to go to the gallery.

From April 10th 2011 Punta della Dogana will show In Praise of Doubt, a presentation of historical pieces and new works including several site-specific projects that question the idea of uncertainty, our convictions about identity, and revisit the relationship between intimate space and the space of artwork.
Among the twenty artists in the exhibition In Praise of Doubt, almost half of them have never been included in previous exhibitions of the François Pinault Collection.

On the steps of Marco Polo

Monday, February 14th, 2011

For some funny reasons, a couple of weeks ago I found myself to host a three then moved to four days chat about Photography, Photojournalism and the power of images in communication at the Marco Polo in Venice.

It has been a fantastic experience being in such close contact with young and talented artists, with such a powerful source of inspirations they can be a  therapy against the Artist Block, see my previous posts about it here and here and even here!)

This slide show is composed by a small selection of images from their Portfolios

The following ones are images taken during the 1h photo-walk we had on the fourth day near the school

Pictures are from:  Nina Alessandri, Giorgia Gavagnin, Costanza Lucarini, Enna Negrini, Carlotta Barina

Their work shows that we need to pay more attention to young artists and young photographers, we need to give them hopes and share with them our knowledge….we will be repaid back  100 times by their powerful source of inspiration! Established photographers should not be worried by young artist on the contrary we should feel energized and challenged by their “competition”…..bring it on!!

PS Forgot to mention next step a small photo book!

Vorticists in Venice

Friday, January 28th, 2011

VENICE, ITALY - JANUARY 28: The Director of the Guggenheim Museum Philip Rylands admires the reconstruction by Ken Cook and Ann Cristopher after the dismantled original of the installation by Jacob Epstein "Rock Drill" at the press launch of the Vorticist exhibition on January 28, 2011 in Venice, Italy. The Vorticists: Rebel Artists in London and New York, 1914-1918, is the first exhibition devoted to Vorticism to be presented in Italy will be open at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection from January 29 through May 15, 2011. (Marco Secchi)

A slave is one who waits for someone to come and free him. (Ezra Pound)

The Vorticism group began with the Rebel Art Centre which Wyndham Lewis and others established after disagreeing with Omega Workshops founder Roger Fry, and has roots in the Bloomsbury Group, Cubism, and Futurism. Lewis himself saw Vorticism as an independent alternative to Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism.

Though the style grew out of Cubism, it is more closely related to Futurism in its embrace of dynamism, the machine age and all things modern (cf. Cubo-Futurism). However, Vorticism diverged from Futurism in the way it tried to capture movement in an image. In a Vorticist painting modern life is shown as an array of bold lines and harsh colours drawing the viewer’s eye into the centre of the canvas.

The name Vorticism was given to the movement by Ezra Pound in 1913, although Lewis, usually seen as the central figure in the movement, had been producing paintings in the same style for a year or so previously.

Must stop moaning

Friday, November 5th, 2010
Casa del Tintoretto

I have complained before about the so called Artist Block at least here and just few days ago . Today I realized that I must stop moaning, at least for the time being, and here are few of the  reasons:

  • I am lucky enough, in this period of my life, to leave in one of the most beautiful and inspiring places of the world: Venice.
  • I live very close to the sea, probably 20 meters and I believe the sea is very inspiring
  • I live about 100mt from where Tintoretto used to live and work, there are so many of his works close to me that is unbelievable.
  • Venice is so rich of libraries, galleries,  museums that is so easy to get inspiration.
  • Life here is relaxed and at a different pace, so you do not get stressed and have all the time you need to get inspired.
  • In Venice lived just to mention some Italian Artists  Canova, Canaletto, Vasari, Giorgione, Mantegna, Titian….

No more excuses then!

Oh no not again!

10 Ways to get over an Artist Block…may be I need to check it again.

Zhang Huan in Milano

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Press opening today at PAC Milan of the exhibition ” Zhang Huan: Ashman”. It is an interesting exhibition by a very nice artist.

Click Here to see  pictures from today opening.

The Chinese artist Zhang Huan is a kind of contemporary Fakir. His means of expression is the body and his preferred technique is performance art. Huan´s stoic attitude towards his body, which serves as his primary creative instrument, makes for thought provoking and dramatic performances. For him, the human body not only gives us proof of our identity, it also makes up its own language.

22 Artists at Casa Testori

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

A very interesting exhibition is taking place in Novate Milanese, just few miles from Milan, at Casa Testori, here is my take!

After the success of last summer, a repeat exhibition of Giorni Felici a Casa Testori, (Happy Days at the Testori House), the unusual co-habitation experience among a variety of artists who span a range of generations, languages and mediums, will take place from June 25th to July 11th.

The home of the Lombard intellectual gets transformed into a veritable Kunsthaus, in which all participating artists can express themselves freely on one of the building’s spaces – bathroom and kitchen included.
