The Ghetto And The Jewish Community In Venice

VENICE, ITALY - NOVEMBER 15: An artisan restores a wooden table dating the XVI Century inside the Levantine Synagogue that was established in 1538 on November 15, 2011 in Venice, Italy. Established in 1516 the Ghetto of Venice was the area were Jews were compelled to live during the Venetian Republic. The English term 'ghetto' is derived from the Venetian term for 'slag' and refers to the refuse left the foundry that was located on the same island. In present times the ghetto is a multi-ethnical area area seen as the cultural heart of the city, but with five synagogues remains the centre of the of Jewish community. (
