Why Autumn in Venice is the Perfect Stage for Real Photography
May 28, 2025And why my black-and-white, street, and documentary workshops are unlike anything else out there.
There’s a certain silence to Venice in autumn. Not the kind you find in a postcard, but the kind that photographers chase—the silence between footfalls echoing down empty alleys, the hush of mist rising from quiet canals, and the stillness of soft, filtered light before the next rain.
This is the Venice I work in. The Venice I teach in. The Venice I want to share.
And this autumn, I’m opening up a few more black-and-white, street, and documentary photography workshops—not just for those looking to learn settings and technique, but for photographers ready to go deeper. To really see.
The Honest Truth About Black-and-White Photography Workshops
Let’s be clear: black-and-white photography isn’t about slapping on a desaturation filter. It’s a way of seeing, a commitment to light and shadow, to form and feeling. It requires restraint, discipline, and a love for storytelling through tones rather than colours.
Too many workshops these days are run by photographers who’ve never shot a roll of Tri-X or spent time in a darkroom. I still shoot film. I still develop some rolls by hand. And when I shoot digital, I use cameras built for black-and-white—no colour sensors, no gimmicks. Just light, composition, and truth.
Why Autumn in Venice?
Because Venice in summer is theatre. In autumn, it becomes poetry.
The light softens. The crowds thin. Reflections stretch longer. And there’s a melancholy in the air that lends itself beautifully to documentary work. Whether you’re photographing a quiet exchange in a bacaro, or the curve of a shadow on a peeling wall, everything slows down.
It’s the perfect time for street and storytelling photography—raw, unfiltered, and real.
What to Expect From My Workshops
Whether you join a 6-hour or 10-hour session, each workshop is completely private and tailored to you. We don’t just walk through Venice—we read it, frame by frame.
You’ll learn:
- How to shoot intuitively using zone focusing (yes, the old-school way that still works best)
- How to see light as structure, not decoration
- How to approach street photography without turning people into props
- How to create a visual story, whether for a single image or a long-term project
All while exploring Venice like a local, far from the clichés.
Who Are These Workshops For?
Anyone with a passion for photography and curiosity. I don’t care if you shoot on a Leica or a phone. What matters is how you see, not what you carry.
But let me be honest: this is not a “walk and snap” tour. This is work. Playful, immersive, inspiring work. The kind that sticks with you.
Ready to Join Me This Autumn?
Venice is calling. Not the Venice of brochures, but the one behind the façades—the one worth discovering.
Spots are limited. I don’t run group tours. I run 1-to-1 experiences because that’s how you learn best.
